Tui Na is a form of Chinese therapeutic massage that, along with acupuncture, herbal medicine, dietetics and Qi Gong, constitutes one of the five pillars of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Its name, composed of 'Tui' (push) and 'Na' (grasp), describes the two fundamental movements of this manual technique practised in China for over 2,000 years. Tui Na differs from Western massage through its theoretical foundation rooted in TCM: it aims to restore harmonious Qi (vital energy) and blood circulation in the meridians, disperse energy stagnation and rebalance Yin and Yang. In Switzerland, Tui Na is practised by certified TCM therapists in private clinics and Chinese medicine centres across Geneva, Lausanne, Zurich, Bern and throughout the country. The practitioner uses a repertoire of over 30 manual techniques — pressure, kneading, rolling, rubbing, percussion, stretching, joint mobilisation — applied along meridians and on acupuncture points (acupoints). Unlike wellness massage, Tui Na is a targeted therapeutic act, often vigorous, that can be performed clothed and without oil. The therapist adapts treatment according to the energy assessment performed using TCM principles (observation, questioning, pulse palpation, tongue examination). Tui Na is recognised by the WHO as a complementary therapy and is particularly effective for musculoskeletal pain (neck, back, sciatica), digestive disorders, headaches, insomnia, stress and paediatric conditions (colic, children's sleep disorders). In Portugal, Tui Na is practised in TCM centres across Lisbon, Porto and other cities by therapists trained at recognised Chinese medicine schools.
